How I Transitioned from Civil Engineering to a Network Engineer in 6 Months
Switching from a core branch like civil engineering into IT feels impossible from the outside. It is not. Every year, non-IT graduates move into stable, well-paid networking roles — they just follow a different path than computer-science grads. Here is the roadmap that works.
Month 0: Fixing the mindset
The biggest barrier is not technical — it is the belief that "I missed the IT bus." You did not. Networking is closer to civil engineering than you think: both are about designing systems, understanding flow (water/traffic vs. packets), and troubleshooting when something breaks. That intuition is an asset.
Months 1–2: CCNA foundations
Start with CCNA. Do not chase the certificate first — chase understanding. Learn the OSI model by watching real packets in Wireshark, not by memorising a mnemonic. When you can see a TCP three-way handshake happen, the theory stops being abstract.
Months 3–4: Hands-on labs
Configuration knowledge fades fast; troubleshooting skill sticks. Spend these months on real hardware — building networks, breaking them, and fixing them. This is where packet-level training pays off: you stop guessing and start reading what the network is actually doing.
Months 5–6: Projects and interview prep
Build a portfolio of real-time troubleshooting scenarios — P1/P2 tickets, root-cause write-ups, and architecture you can explain on a whiteboard. Pair this with mock interviews. Most NOC interviews are troubleshooting conversations, not theory quizzes.
Landing the first role
The first job is usually NOC or technical support — and that is exactly right. A NOC role teaches you more in six months than years of study. From there, the path to CCNP and specialisation opens up.
